Vodafone New Zealand has announced the launch of 5G fixed-wireless access broadband services in parts of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Customers in the coverage areas can now enjoy 5G download speeds, unlimited data and wireless connectivity from NZD69 a month (USD50), using a simple plug-and-play set-up that does not require specialist installation. The operator claims testing indicates the new service can achieve download speeds on the Vodafone network of up to 750Mbps and potentially surpass 1Gbps in optimum conditions.

Carolyn Luey, Consumer Director, Vodafone NZ, said: ‘New Zealanders on 4G Broadband are some of our most satisfied broadband customers, so we are extremely confident that Kiwis will love 5G Broadband. It’s easy as. Just over a year ago we launched New Zealand’s first 5G mobile network with huge success. We want our customers to have access to next-generation tech, so we are now excited to offer 5G Broadband in parts of Aotearoa’s major urban centres – with more locations coming soon.’

Vodafone NZ chief executive Jason Paris has previously said the company is aiming to migrate some 25% of its customers to fixed-wireless within two to three years, implying a rise from 40,000 to more than 100,000, and 5G should help it achieve that goal. Rival telco Spark was the first operator to launch 5G wireless broadband in New Zealand when it piloted the technology in five small South Island towns in late 2019, and it has since activated 5G mobile and fixed-wireless access services in Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Te Awanutu and parts of central Auckland and Dunedin over the past year.
