R&S LTE-A Carrier Aggregation Test System

Device:Test Instrument

Vendor: Rohde & Schwarz

Overview

Carrier Aggregation is definitely the most important and most used features out of the LTE-Advanced feature set (3GPP Rel.10, 11, 12). Carrier Aggregation on the one hand increases the reachable peak date rate per UE (increasing the bandwidth) and on the other hand allows for more flexibility for operators in exploiting fragmented spectrum portions in different bands. It started in the market with 2 Carrier Aggregation (2CA) in downlink direction for user devices / smart phones. Nowadays the market requires test systems for aggregation of more Component Carriers in Downlink direction and also in the Uplink direction. Even testing capabilities for the Carrier Aggregation combining TD-LTE and LTE FDD are available. (LTE TDD-FDD joint operation). Due to its unique feature of setting up frequencies up to 6GHz, CMW500 can already be used to simulate LTE bands in 5GHz spectrum (known as band 252 and 255, e.g. for License Assisted Access – LAA, a.k.a LTE-U). Key component of the R&S LTE-A Carrier Aggregation Test System is the R&S®CMW500 radio communication tester that is able to test and verify the signaling and performance behavior of mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, data sticks and machine-to-machine modules (throughout this document identified as UE = “user equipment”). Creation of wireless signaling tests on the R&S®CMW500 wideband radio communication tester is made very easy using R&S®CMWcards (a Graphical Test Script Definition Tool for CMW500 Mobile Radio Tester). Just by setting up a hand of cards (no programming skills are required) the signaling tests can be created.

Features & Benefits

• 4CA in downlink as well as 2CA in the uplink direction are already available with the latest SW release of the R&S®CMW500.

• Due to its unique feature of setting up frequencies up to 6GHz, CMW500 can already be used to simulate LTE bands in 5GHz spectrum (known as band 252 and 255, e.g. for License Assisted Access – LAA, a.k.a LTE-U).

• In addition, extended internal fading capabilities are provided by the R&S®CMW500.

• Using the Graphical Test Script Definition Tool for CMW500 Mobile Radio Tester (R&S®CMWcards) the creation of signaling test scripts is made very easy and intuitive. It reduces significantly the time for test script creation and UE CA verification.

• With the R&S®CMWcards tool Rohde & Schwarz could combine a high flexibility in testing with easy to use operation which is also unique in the market.
